When I was in high school my friends and I would spend our lunch hours in a classroom one of our teachers offered up for us to watch films in. The day we decided to watch “Evil Dead” another teacher walked in at the exact moment in the film that featured a possessed tree, a bare breasted scared girl, and a lot of groping prodding branches. Talk about awkward. He actually stayed around for a bit to see what happened next. Who wouldn’t?
Five friends travel to a cabin the woods where they unknowingly awaken some evil spirits. Can they survive the night?
“Evil Dead” is the first installment of the Evil Dead Series. I happened to watch this series in the reverse order. Ending with this one. Evil Dead is a good film on it’s own merits, but compared to the other two it’s the weakest of the films. It doesn’t help that the second film was a remake of the first with a much bigger budget. Or a budget for that matter. What’s really missing is the constant over the top slapstick humor that’s featured in the other films, and the overly macho bad ass that Ash is in the latter films. In this one he’s pretty much a wimp. All that being said it’s actually a pretty good horror film. Probably the scariest of the three. But that’s not the reason I watch Evil Dead films.
Best Line: Now the sun will be up in an hour or so, and we can all get out of here together. You, me, Linda, Shelly. Hmm… Well… not Shelly.
