Mutant Vampire Zombies from the Hood (2008)
Apparently “Snakes on a Plane” was a heavy influence on the zombie genre. For the third week in a row one of the films we watched had a reference to the Samuel L Jackson horror film. Second time with the exact line “I’m tired of these mother fucking zombies in my mother fucking hood!” Unfortunately this line is completely random and does nothing but point out your watching a film that is trying to leech off the popularity of another film. But then again when your movie is called “Mutant Vampire Zombies from the Hood!” I guess you’re already trying every trick in the book to get people to watch the film.
The film starts out with a ten minute credit sequence that is just a montage of LA streets shot while hanging the camera outside the window of a moving car. This went on for 9 and half minutes too long. Once we actually get to the film things pick up a bit, as long as you ignore the terrible cheesy solar flare FX. Two cops are ready to bust a drug deal between two rival gangs. After a shootout where 20 shots are fired and only 1 bullet hit something, it just happens to land in one of the cops’ chest. Just then a radioactive solar flare passes by the earth and wham! Mutant Vampire Zombies everywhere people were that wasn’t some kind of shelter that shielded them from the radiation. So what’s left to do but go and find survivors that might just save you from impending doom.
This film was very hit and miss. Probably leaning more towards miss. Much like the last film I reviewed, this movie has a cast of recognizable no names. And the best acting done in the film is by the guy with almost the least amount of lines. Of course looking like an Asian version of Tommy Chong he didn’t have to say much at all. And apparently the main character’s love interest didn’t have to say much in order to get into his pants as they wasted no time setting forth to repopulate the earth only hours after meeting. And doing so underneath the moon with 20 some odd zombies watching. It wasn’t very hot at all, the girl seemed to enjoy having the zombies watch a bit too much. So we’ve got drawn out opening credits, cheesy FX, over used “Snakes” line, sub par acting, and awkward sex scene. A lot of misses there, so where are the hits? I’m having trouble remembering any. I think one of the most enjoyable things about the film was being able to rip apart the bad stuff and make fun of it. In reality it was probably made to poke fun at and not be taken seriously. All you have to do is read the title to realize that.
