Very believable. Effective documentary-style hand-held filming.

If subtitles bother you, try Quarantine, instead.

RECHave you seen the movie “Rec”? No? Have you seen the movie “Quarantine”? Yes. Well then you’ve seen “Rec” only with less reading.

“Rec” is the Spanish film that the movie “Quarantine” was based on. Well more than just based on. They used the exact same set, exact same dialogue pretty much, exact same creepy zombie creatures. In fact the only discernible differences between the two films were the fact that “Quarantine” looked higher film quality and in one the actors speak Spanish and English in the other.

“Rec” follows a reporter and her cameraman as they record a piece on their local fire-fighters. After following them on what appears to be a routine call they find themselves in for more than they expected when the woman who they are there to help attacks a police officer and bites him. To make matters worse they return to the lobby only to find that the whole building has been quarantined. Not being able to get help to the officer in trouble and not receiving any answers to their increasing number of questions causes frustration to boil over and panic to set in. Will they be able to survive this ordeal and each other?

What I liked most about this film is how believable they were able to make it. This is impressive for me because I usually don’t buy into the video camera perspective films. I think it may of been the fact that they were speaking another language. Perhaps that helped enhance the performances of the actors because everything I was reading I was believing. I also prefer the lower quality of film to that of “Quarantine” because it makes it more believable as well. But most importantly this film freaked me out. Like looking over my shoulder as I walked to my car that night freaked out. The zombie people were scary and the creature at the end was absolutely frightening. “REC” is a really good thriller, that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Just make sure you don’t have to go anywhere dark and alone for a couple of days after watching it.
